Raimi was deliberatly trying to make a Lee/Ditko comic come to life. I think he got the tone spot on. Believe me there’s a LOT more cheesy dialogue in a Stan Lee comic than “We’ll meet again, Spider-Man!”
It’s mindblogging how successful those Ice Age movies are internationally. The last one was the 3rd highest grossing film ever internationally at the time of its release. How’d that happen?
That may have been what Raimi was going for, and he may have done that well, but I think it was a stupid choice to make. Comic books from that era may have had good stories and whatnot, but they were aimed at little kids. And I think trying to bring that tone to a big budget action movie is a mistake.
